so it's been a while.

im takin this site in a different direction. for all of those that were used to music, since i can't find a dedicated server, im gonna just hit up a couple of sendspace links at the end of each update. but from now on the main focus of the site is going to be exactly what its title says: random.

for today i just wanna hit you up with a good book to read, especially if you're leanin towards healthcare as your choice of career. it's a novel by a toronto doctor by the name of Vincent Lam, called "Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures: Stories". it's a collection of short stories following 4 main characters, and trust me it's pretty dope reading. and its quick too, i read it in like 2 days. anyways, check that out. the next on my list is "A Complicated Kindness" by Miriam Toews...

week 35: summer nights...

arite i kno i update like once every 2 years but wat can i say, i've been busy (which means that i've really just been lazy to update). anyways, this week im bringin some heat inspired by summer 2005. see in summer 2005 there was a joint that came out called "Tell Me (Remix)" by Bobby Valentino and Lil' Wayne, which ended up becoming my anthem for summer evenings/nights. when i hear that song, i think of one of the best and most chill summers i ever had. so this update, im bringin u a bunch of new tracks that give off that same vibe of just cruisin in the ride with the windows down, late at night usually after a jam around like 2 or 3 in the morning, either headed to a next spot to lounge or just back to ur own place to chill. just with all ur peeps enjoyin that smooth aura that only the summer can bring. so enjoy this shiet.

oh yea, next update i will be bringin back some raw hip-hop, i know it's been r&b for a while. also, im gonna return to actually describing individual songs. gotta kick this slacker attitude before school starts up again. peace.

first off, DON'T sleep on this track. for those that dont kno, Drex Inkredible is a dope emcee coming out of Toronto and so is Mayhem Morearty. my brother schooled me to this track, definitely a pretty dope cut. Drex is the featured artist for this month on Hip Hop Canada and my bro did that interview with him on the site. Pretty nice track with a chilled out beat and r&b chorus about what's been goin on in toronto in terms of all the violence, Mayhem has a nice guest spot too, i'll post more by him in a later update. ah i caught the video to this track on Vintage Vibe and it brought back some good memories of grade 8. i don't know if anyone remembers this track off the "Soul Food" soundtrack, it was one of the very few hip-hop cuts on there. this track is just so soulful, with Cee-Lo on the hook and contributing a verse, and 'Kast doing what they do best - flowing with some real meaningful lyrics fo sho. definitely a summer joint, bbq/chillin music. "just keep your faith in me, don't act impatiently, you'll get there when you need to be, in due time..."

my homeboy larry schooled me onto some songs by this Toronto artist by the name of Slakah The BeatChild. this guy just got signed to Universal and is gonna be releasing some dope r&b. this song that i've uploaded is very very chill, that beat, i dont know how to describe it, it just sounds so nice. definitely get this track, Slakah has a smooth voice, kinda reminiscent of Musiq, and this track is PURE summer night hotness. okay so normally i'm not that big a fan of bhangra, even tho i'm brown. but this track just stuck out for some reason. it's pretty old, but its really sick. the flutes that open up the track are too nice, then the beat from "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince drops in and just blows the track out the water. the vocals are originally by Surinder Sonia. this is some good time bbq music for sure, especially if you're brown. this track just makes me wanna lounge back and just enjoy the weather.. grab this track FO SHO.

for those of u that check the site on the regular, u'll probably notice that whenever i do a reggae update i tend to put at least one track by Sizzla. this man is one of my faovurite reggae artists, he always puts out quality music. this weekend i downloaded "The Best Of Sizzla: The Story Unfolds", a 2-disc compilation that was released in 2002 with some of Sizzla's dirrrrtiest tracks. so i said screw it, im gonna put up a few tracks from this compilation just coz it's that dope and a couple other Sizzla joints i had lying around. the tracks i'm puttin up are HEAT, and now that i got the new server u got no excuse but download them ALL.

week 23: somethin different...

ok it seems like since i started putting music on the site, i've been leaning more towards hip-hop/r&b/jazz influenced sounds. but i know a lot of people, including me, are into a lot more than just those genres. i dont even agree with genres, i just say listen to everything that sounds ill. so this week i'm gonna put up some "rock" (i guess if u want to categorize it). most of it's pretty mellow, but its damn nice music, really chill..

also i found a new server to host the files so i'm gonna test it out and see how it goes, instead of using rapidshare. for these new links just right-click the "download it" link and goto "Save Target As" or "Save Link As", a LOT easier than before.

this is the opening track off of OutKast's "ATLiens" album. so mellow, i've been searching for the original sample all day but I can't figure out what it is. someone help me with that, i'll give you a dollar (yea i'm ballin). anyways this track was produced by Organized Noize and has Joi Gilliam singing in this near-hypnotic tone, with an amazing soft instrumental in the background. i NEED to know what was sampled for this song, it was sampled on a couple other songs too like "The City" by Young Buck and a remix of "December 4th" by Jay-Z. definitely a must-download although it's a pretty short track. "you can be sure, some go low to get high, you may hurt til you cry, you may die, keep on tryin, til it's summer in the city, til it's summer in the city..."

ok so i just got a copy of the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album called "Stadium Arcadium" and i've been listening to it all day, trust me this cd is amazing. it's vintage Chili Peppers for sure, really really good songs on this album that i had to put 2 of them in today's update. this song is really chill and the guitar solo that starts at 3:49 is so crazy. there's so much to be heard in this and all of their songs in terms of lyrics and music. in last week's update i put up a track by Nas called "You're The Man". that track was produced by Large Professor who sampled this song by Sixto Rodriguez off his 1969 album "Cold Fact". he flipped the vocal saying "sugar man.." into "you're the man" for the Nas song. the original is really dope too though, a psychedelic folk song about drug dealers (yea it aint just rappers that talk about drugs). "sugar man, wont you hurry, coz im tired of these scenes, for a blue coin, wont you bring back, all those colours to my dreams..."

another track off of the new "Stadium Arcadium" album. classic vibe, really really interesting lyrics in this track, and the instrumentals are nice too, but what i really like is the range in vocals throughout the track, providing contrasts and emphasizing certain phrases in the verses and hooks. definitely grab this track too. "disintegrated by the rising sun, i'm rolling back into oblivion, and I'd like to think that I'm your number one, but i (roll back into oblivion)..."

ahh man as much as i love wildin out to some of the music comin out of the durrty south, and there are some real dope emcees down there to go along with their share of idiots (D4L im talkin to YOU), i gotta say that none of these cats are doin it the way the Dungeon Family was doin' it for so long. Goodie Mob and OutKast completely destroyed everything on the radio when they debuted.

so for this update im just hittin u with straight OutKast.. some of my favourite songs by them.. there are a LOT more than just the few im puttin up from their first 3 albums, but to understand that yall gotta go get that shiet.

i had to skip a week again coz of exams. taught myself the entire semester of organic chemistry in three days. i guess i should go to lectures. ah well.

Sergio is a nice Brazillian piano player and Gracinha is soooo soulful on this. Stevie Wonder isnt singing, he's playing harmonica on this track and i'm blown away. Probably cuz the whole album is Nas at a next level. This track has some sick horns in it, and just a feel good vibe to it, Nasir’s flow is smooth with Maxwell’s singing. this track has remnants of MJ influenced production if you hear u can feel a bit of “wanna be starting something” of this track. Definetly worth peepin.

Heavy D & The Boyz - I'll Do Anything

Sanga: RIP J.Dilla… can someone please tell me how he comes up with this crazy shit? Mind blowing….probably hands down one of my favorite Tribe beats, off one of the best Tribe albums out there (Beats, Rhymes, & Life). The bass line of this beat with that sample its pure Dilla... if anyone changed the game and made producers step things out in a quiet but strong legendary way, Jay Dee did... an unsung hero of hip hop.

Sanga: Who woulda thunk JD and a Donell track would sound so crisp... a slow pounding bass reminiscent of many Dupri tracks with a light fluffy strings to accompany it, the mids of this track rely heavily on the vocals emphasizing Donell's voice, not sure if JD’s part on this track are consistent with the whole track itself... feels like two different vibes , I’m not a big fan of Jermaine Dupri on tracks... and even less of a fan of his Alien-proportioned bald head (Nabeel: How the hell did this midget pull Janet Jackson?). But this tracks definetly worth a mention for Donell.

Mystic is a talented lyricist and ill r&b vocalist too, kinda like Lauryn Hill, but more of a west coast underground emcee. this shows off both sides of her voice, and its a real nice track, so grab it.

week 4: 9th wonder of the world...

ok so this week im servin up some 9th wonder.. by now most people kno who 9th wonder is: one of the illest producers doin it right now, with a style that is a throwback to the early 90s, basing most of his beats on soul samples similar to the way pete rock and dj premier used to. mostly an underground cat workin with his group Little Brother, 9th broke out into the mainstream when he was asked by Jay-Z to produce a track for "The Black Album". 9th mainly uses FruityLoops to program his shiet and it comes out soundin real soulful.

for today's update i just took a random sample of tracks produced by 9th wonder, so this isn't like a top 5 or anything just some random songs that he's done and ones that i was playing a lot over the weekend.. if u wanna find more do ur own damn searchin, damn.. haha.. enjoy.

week 2: it started in '94...

ok week 2. i was listening to a LOT of hiphop this week and i realized that i was playin a lot of 'old' tracks. i checked my playlist and found out that i had a nice line-up of stuff on there year by year starting with 1994. now for those that dont kno, '94 was the year that Nas dropped "Illmatic", which completely CHANGED the whole hiphop scene, like when this album came out, EVERYTHING related to hiphop just stopped and said 'holy sh*t....' Nas' influence on rap is insane, in terms of drug-talk, storytelling, talkin bout how fly u are, he redefined it all.

so what i did for this week was put together a year by year set of rap, starting with 1994 and ending at 1999. those were the years when i was HOOKED.. u'll notice i have two 1997 tracks, and thats coz that was the year, grade 7, that there was no turning back from hiphop, it was a part of my life. enjoy the selection nuccas.

1994: Nas - N.Y. State Of Mind

1998: OutKast - Aquemini

the title track off of outkast's 5 mic opus "aquemini", this is a lesson in flow. very mellow, this track is all about lyrics, the beat is pretty dope but the way big boi and andre ride that beat is crazy. at 3:15 into the song the beat fades, comes back with a bang, and these nuccas just freak the hell out of it.

1999: Dr. Dre - Xxplosive (feat. Hittman, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, & Six-Two)

the reason i chose this track for 1999 is coz it's off the "2001" album and brought back a whole new era of west coast rap. plus it makes me think of grade 9, which was one funny ass time. anyway, dr. dre sampled "bumpy's lament" by isaac hayes for this track, and the beat is disgusting. erykah badu even jacked the instrumental. the lyrics are kiiiinda questionable but it doesnt bother me, and the joint has kurupt on it, so it's dope music.

this is a straight instrumental track with a disgusting strings section and man the way the flutes hit near the middle is so key its not even a joke. nujabes is a producer from japan who doesn't rely on any samples for his shit, this track is off the 4 disc soundtrack to an anime called "samurai champloo", and the specific disc that this is off of is called "departure".. some reallll ill shiet on all 4 discs.

now for some local toronto talent, brass munk has been makin some dope music for years, and this is their latest single. real chill and lounge vibe, i wish they released this track earlier in the summer but i cant complain, darryl riley on the hook makes it sound smooth and agile's production is cold.

fort minor is mike shinoda's alter ego, for all of u who don't know who mike shinoda is, he's the rapper/producer from linkin park. his new album called "the rising tied" is comin to stores soon and is executive producd by jay-z. this track is HUGE, but u gotta listen to the lyrics on it. mike's doin his thing tho, he wrote, played every instrument, and produced every song on this album, hustlin hard. this track is a bit more gutter than the other stuff i put up so far, but still dope.
